Hanare by Takamaya - Craving for Japanese Iron Pot Rice

I’m back at Hanare by Takamaya to satisfy my craving for iron pot rice, aka kamameshi!

Being slow-cooked in iron pot, the fluffy, starchy rice is pumped full with the essence of wagyu beef. So hearty and so flavourful.

Sweet, delicious sashimi that comes with set lunch.

Equally good, flavourful and smooth chawamushi.

Crab Gratin is packed with creamy briny goodness of crab meat, and more doses of umami from the innards to make it even better. My favourite here with the kamameshi.

Yuzu sorbet is a nice cooling treat after the iron pot rice.

Yuzu Cheesecake is incredibly creamy, with lots of zesty taste from the yuzu. Nice!

Thoughtful: Absolutely Hearty Treats!

Hanare by Takayama - Awesome Pure Comfort Food

Hanare caught my attention because of Kamameshi, one of the few Japanese dishes that I had only tried once about eight years ago. And this is quite a rarity in Singapore. I’m eager to try authentic Kamameshi because I remember how good it was and I can imagine how good mixed rice slow-cooked in iron pot over stone stove can be. Yes, the novelty of it also attracted me.

And yup, the food here meets my expectations and is a must-try for foodies.

The interior of the restaurant is of clean design with Japanese Cedar and Zen as its basis. A conducive environment to enjoy food. Service is efficient and nice. Definitely a place I love to introduce my friends and family to because the Kamameshi here is an awesome pure comfort food that will please most local palates.

After being cooked in iron pot for 20 minutes, the Tottori Snow Crab Kamameshi is served and I opt to let the service staff mix the kamameshi for me.

The moment the wooden lid is lifted up, I catch the whiffs of essence of the ocean mixed with the aroma of cooked rice. And when I take the first bite of the kamameshi, a feeling of pure satisfaction and simple bliss fills me up. Every Japanese Koshihikari rice grain is soaked with the flavours of the sea, the sweetness of the crab and umami. The rice is fluffy, aromatic and moist while not soggy. The sliced mushroom and peas add a good layer of texture to the rice and shredded crab meat.

After I finish this Kamameshi, I'm so tempted to order a second one!

Tottori Snow Crab Gratin is creamy and bursting with the sweetness of crab meat and crab innards. I love this too.

Warabi Mochi with Milk Ice-cream and Red Bean is a refreshing, lovely dessert to seal the deal.

Thoughts: I love Kamameshi ... and Snow Crab Gratin!

Wanderlust Cafe - Pretty Place, Delicious Cakes

I am only walking around Takashimaya when I see a pretty pink pastel corner with a display of beautiful cakes, the blue galaxy cake totally caught my attention from afar. Curiosity drives me to get closer to get a better look of the cakes. I am preparing to go home already, so I have no intention to eat anything there already. The friendly pinay staff immediately greets me when I take a step up, so I just ask about the cakes. And after her introduction of Lychee Rose cake, I'm totally sold on this and decide to dine in.

Lychee and Rose are marriage made in heaven since both have floral notes that work perfectly together. While most Lychee Rose cakes at other places will focus on the taste of the rose, Wanderlust's Lychee Rose cake–supplied by Cream & Custard actually–focuses on the Lychee instead, which is refreshing. And the taste sure is super refreshing. The refreshing lychee juice contained within the pretty boba pearls on top of the cake juxtaposes so well with the lovely creaminess of the lychee mousse. The rose cake sponge adds texture and that nice aroma of baked goods to this confectionery. I love this so much.

Situated right in the centre of level 3 of Takashimiya, it is a good place to take a break from shopping or, see and to be seen. I'm at the category to be seen only since I'm too focused on my cake as it is too delicious. By the way, the Lychee Cake is sold out by the time I leave the cafe. Wow, it is that popular, and it is only 3pm in the afternoon.

Thoughts: Nice place to take a break and enjoy good cakes.
