Au Balcon - Ultimate Bon Viviant's Dream

Dempsey Hill of the North ... and it's right at Park Lane in Seletar! I had always heard about this place, but never got around to come here, until I know about Au Balcon. The menu here looks very attractive to me and so here I am. I'm totally wowed by the surroundings of this place. Coming here is like walking into an exclusive estate where the classy bungalow house is surrounded by lawns and stretches of lush greenery with no high rise buildings in sight. And with the good food here, this is really a bon viviant's dream come true where one just simply enjoys the finer things in life. This place is totally instagram-worthy.

Housed above Wildseed Cafe on the second floor, Au Balcon is an enclosed space that feels more like an open area due to the whole stretch of large windows lining most of the perimeter of the dining room. So a bon viviant can enjoy the comforts of air-condition and still indulge in the feel of dining outdoors, being surrounded by the greenery with lots of natural light. The place is classy with a homely touch due to the whitewashed walls, hanging plants, classic wooden table tops, and white wooden chairs with lovely floral print cushions.

To complete the experience, service is very good, being friendly and efficient. Definitely a place I will recommend to enjoy a moment of life away from the buzz and bustle of urban city.

Mudcrab Omelette looks so beautiful, with the flowers and herbs adorning the perfectly prepared omelette that is solid on the outside to hold all the goodies within and runny on the inside. So the runny egg throughly coats the briny sweet mud crab, and with pungent spring onion and the stretchy, slightly gooey Gruyere cheese mixed in, this is pure delight on the palates.

Nice light, sweet white wine recommended by the friendly service staff.

Grilled prawns features super huge, succulent, meaty kelong prawns. The shells are so thin and nicely cooked to crispy consistency that I easily eat them along with the sweet flesh. The smoky aroma of the slightly charred surface of the meat makes it all the more better. Ah, eating this is enjoyment ...

I totally love the Yoghurt Sorbet here because it is super refreshing in taste. And it looks very pretty too. The yoghurt is creamy yet light on the palates, going so well with the mint jelly. The honeycomb crispy yoghurt gives a nice variation in texture. I love this so much.

Entrance to Au Balcon inside Wildseed Cafe.

Inner Dinning hall, which is more cosy. I came in at the earliest time so I could walk around happily to snap pictures lol

Staircase leading to Au Balcon.

This place is so good for spending a lazy afternoon, or gatherings with friends and family at night due to the perfect ambience. I saw the LED lights setup outside the restaurant, so I figured it will look very pretty at night too. The food is very good too, being pleasing to most palates. Most of the items on the menu are well-catered to local tastes. Now, I want so much to bring my loved ones or friends to here to just enjoy some relaxing time here.

Province by Law Jia-Jun - Exceptional Unique South East Asian Flavours

Dining at Province is an amazing experience where I feel like I had travelled to various parts of ASEAN in the comforts of a restaurant. The food here, with its quality ingredients sourced from specialty farms around ASEAN, is so unique and delicious, full of nuanced flavours, that I realise there is actually lots of potential for contemporary South East Asian cuisine, and it can be interpreted in ways that we had never seen before.

It is quite an adventure here where Chef Low Jia-Jun meticulously pieces together the components of each dish right in front of the patrons, who can catch whiffs of the aroma of the components during plating. This is followed by the introduction of the dishes, where the chef explained the story behind the dish, the origins of the seasonal ingredients, the reason for the use of these ingredients. He really travels around ASEAN to look for inspiration and the ingredients in season to make these dishes possible.

The restaurant is located at the back of Eating House 808 and is a intimate cosy space that can host about eight diners. The service here is of course exceptional because the chefs–young, energetic and full of passion for their crafts–are the service crew who want to do their best for the restaurant.

This is one dining experience that foodies should go for at least once.

The Snacks are beautifully plated to resemble the lush greenery of South East Asia jungles and fields. Tomato and Kombu Lime-Smoked Snapper from Ah Hua Kelong instantly refreshes the palates while making them happy with a multitude of subtle flavours. The snapper is clean in taste with a dash of briny sweetness. A very good start.

Next up is Carrot Croustade & Ricotta, packed with the sweetness of carrot and zing of ricotta, is more earthy in taste. I like this transition in taste profile.

Prawn Tsukune with Calamansi Kosho and Prawn Tare surprises me with its texture and taste. Its texture is really like that of chicken tsukune, but the taste of prawn tsukune is way more complex due to the light umami of the prawns. The special sauce drizzled over the tsukune lifts up the whole taste.

After the power trio of snacks, I'm totally excited on what is to come.

Into the Gardens is such a beautiful dish, both in terms of looks and taste. The ravoli is filled to brim with the sweetness of caramelised onions plus hints of the lovely pungency of onions and spring onions. The fermented carrot introduces the bits of excitement to the flavours while the fresh crunchy greens are refreshing in taste. All these are nicely rounded up by the Grilled Tang-O sauce.

Yup, and after savouring this dish, I'm still scrapping the plate for the tiniest bits of greens and sauce because I love it so much.

Nice fruity white wine from Sicily to go with the first part of the course.

Tubers showcases how sweet potatoes can actually be so amazing in taste. Taking into account the cooking process and the transportation time that affects the amount of starch converting to sugars, Chef-Law finds the right balance between earthy sweetness and starchy texture of the cubes of sweet potato. The sweet potatoes have such good bite due to the iota of chewiness, to the point that it feels meaty, which is cool. These delicious nuggets are hidden beneath the buah keluak puree, with its nutty goodness, and smoked potato espuma, both of which add more variation to the taste profile.

Molluscs has super tender Grilled Abalone with Liver Sauce stacked over a mix of Jasmine Rice and Glutinous Rice, with a crown of Laksa Leaf Radish on top. So many flavours and textures at work here, and they work beautifully together to yield the perfect comfort food. And when mixed with fish broth at the second part, this becomes the best mui fan I ever have.

Full bodied red wine to go with the heavier dishes at the second part of the meal to tone down the richness.

Finned features a special Garoupa with Mussel Jus, Smoked Coconut Cream and Sweet Peas. The garoupa fish is a specialty from South China sea during this season, where it is egg laying season, so the fishes are fatter. First of all, I love the slightly charred top of the fish, which is so crispy, thus juxtaposes very well with the unique firm yet succulent texture of the flesh. This is the first time I try such a different texture in fish, and I love it. The mussel jus extracted from mussels of Ah Hua Kelong has such lovely mild umami. The smoked coconut cream adds a nice light creaminess while the sweet peas are like pops of refreshment in the dish.

14 Day aged Duck with Aubergine puree, grilled Oyster Mushrooms and Duck Jus is unbelievably tender. This is one perfectly done duck steak, especially when seasoned with a special spice from a Thai village to cut through the richness of the duck. The accompanying duck heart is very surprisingly not metallic and gamey in flavour at all. Being someone who will gag when trying any organs, except for foie gras, obviously lol, I can actually finish this heart easily.

Fruit is Longan interpreted in different ways as sherbet, pudding and poached, with a pickled Thai basil for a dash of zest injected into the musky sweetness of longan. Plus the crispy rice puff, the result is a sweet refreshing delight with varied textures. I love this!

Soursop sorbet has just the right balance of sweetness and sourness. It is creamy in taste, going excellently with the smoky flavour and sweet aroma of the handmade love letter. Prik Pao, with its spiciness, makes this dessert very interesting and exciting.

I totally love this place and all the dishes of the 7 course meal here. Dining here is an experience like no others. It is one of the best restaurants here. I look forward to see what new surprises they have in store for next season.

Zorba The Greek Taverna - Lovely Place with Lovely Food

Zorba is the first restaurant where I actually dine outdoors in the afternoon. It happened due to my schedule, my craving for Greek food and my curiosity on dining right by the river. Luckily, I wear light and there are at least 10 fans to keep things really cool. The place is really very scenic, with Singapore River and the rows of low rise heritage buildings at the opposite bank as backdrop. And from this place, I can see the unobstructed view of the whole stretch of blue sky. Best of all, it’s pet friendly!

And with the friendly and sincere service (a shout-out to the young lad staff who responds to all my requests immediately and always with a smile), delicious food, dining here is really a lovely experience. I'm starting to like this form of dining at the outdoors, provided there are beautiful view, good service and great food, of course.

Garides Saganaki, which is Pan Fried Prawns with Tomato Sauce, Feta Cheese, Baby Salad and Rice, is such a lovely dish that is bursting with nuanced flavours, peppered with the intensity of Feta Cheese. The super huge, fresh prawns are so briny sweet and succulent. The tomato sauce is rich, mildly sweet with an iota of tangy taste, and it's the perfect sauce to soak the rice in to yield pure comfort food of goodness. The rice is also very flavourful despite its appearance. I think it had been cooked in light broth. I love this dish.

Kalamari is served with just a slice of lemon for extra taste, so I do wonder if it will be plain without any sauce. Well, these deep-fried, super tender squid rings wrapped with crispy batter taste very good on their own, no sauce needed. Pretty addictive snack, I had easily finished these in minutes 😁

Yiaourti Me Meli is a simple dessert of Greek Yoghurt drizzled with honey and topped with walnuts, and it works. Greek yoghurt is renowned to be the best yoghurt due to the creamier taste and thicker consistency, and this tastes even better with honey for the sweetness and walnuts for the crunchiness and nutty flavour. I do wish there are more walnuts added. A good light dessert to end the meal with.

I'm actually surprised by how good the food is in this restaurant since I had this assumption that restaurants at Clarke Quay area is more about the ambience. Yup, assumptions are the road blocks to discovery of great new adventures. I'm glad my curiosity overrides my assumption this time for me to take the leap to check out Zorba. Of course, the well-rounded menu of Zorba also attracts me to here too.

With the good food here, I think I'm way more eager now to specially take time to come here in the evening to enjoy the amazing scenery here. I saw the photos of evening scene here, they are gorgeous.

Feng Food - Guan Miao Noodles is the Specialty here

One of Taiwanese's specialty is Guan Miao Noodles, which has an awesome texture due to process of being sundried, yielding that springy texture. To add on, the surface of the noodles is very smooth, and I like it. So when I'm at Northpoint, I decide to eat the Guan Miao Noodles at Feng Food simply because I want something special and nice.

The hearty bowl of noodles is pretty lightly seasoned with soy sauce, scallots and oil, maybe a hint of vinegar, and let the unique texture of the Guan Miao noodles shine on its own. The noodles are so good that I actually feel that there is more meat than noodles. Yup, one of those rare times it happens to me. Then again, this place is very generous with the tender, well-fried pork chop. I also like the pickled cucumber, which refreshes the palates.

Black Sugar Pearl Milk Tea is not bad lah. RnB is still the best to me.

If here, go for Guan Miao Noddles instead of the usual type.
