The minimalist, clean style of Fieldnotes by Zee & Elle definitely caught my attention when I passed by the place on a weekday afternoon. I didn't know how popular this cool, quaint cafe is until I finally have the extra capacity in my stomach to visit it on a weekend afternoon. Oh boy, it is almost full and there is a continuous stream of patrons coming in behind me. I got really lucky to get a seat and get a taste of their amazingly light cream cake.
I come into Fieldnotes on impromptu, so I have no idea what to order. So I choose the old-school favourite of Strawberry Shortcake, expecting it to be nice but give no surprise in taste and texture. Well, this cake surprises me by how incredibly light its cream and cake sponge are. Probably the lightest cake I ever have, with the creaminess and wholesomeness very intact. I'm actually very full when I come here, but this cake is so light and easy on the palate that I finish it within minutes.
The tables in the cafe are interestingly made of reflective metallic material that gives an edge to the zen interior. The ones at the outside are fixed to the stone bench, which are perfect for chilling with boyfriend/girlfriend/friends at evening or night. The height of the tables is pretty low, which I feel create less distance between people, thus promoting interaction. And I guess one just looks cool when lounging beside a low table due to the aesthetics of the body not being obstructed by table lol With that said, the tables make it more of a place to hang out with friends rather than for foodies to enjoy food.
I actually had the intention to just try a cake here only to satisfy my curiosity about this place, but I end up liking the Strawberry Shortcake a lot and surprised by how unique it is. So I'm now eager to try the other creations in their repertoire of super light cakes.
