Furano Yukidoke Cheesecake

A stroll through Mediya and Furano Yukidoke Cheesecake immediately catches my attention. Whipped cream on cheesecake? I'm on it!

And the light cloud-like whipped cream is perfect match with the melt-in-your-mouth cheesecake with a sweet nutty flavour. This is so good!

Shitoi Koibito Hakodate Pastry Snaffles Cheesecake

Got another prized find in Don Don Donki!

This cheesecake is literally melt-in-your-mouth quality. So rich in taste, so creamy with a tang from the cheese. Absolute indulgence.

Since this is so good, I also got the strawberry version on another day! The aroma of real strawberries is so pronounced, I love it.

Keong Saik Bakery - So Good, so Unique

 Shifted to another location

On my search for lava cheesecakes, Keong Saik Bakery immediately caught my attention with its repertoire of unique cheesecakes and the fact that four types of cheeses are used in its cheese creations. I immediately order it through GrabFood and after trying the cakes and cruffins, I can say I totally love them.

Needless to say, I make it a point to head down to this quaint bakery. It is possible to dine in on weekdays. The dining space is small, but very cozy, with loads of nostalgia. Perfect for a intimate time with that special someone. The service is very good, friendly and non-intrusive.

The selection is awesome. There is sure one that suits one’s fancy. For me, I want to get them all!

The packaging is old-school yet classy at the sane time.

Attap Chee Rose Cheesecake is highly recommended. The bits of chewy attap chee introduces sweet variation to the smooth texture of the cheesecake. The light aroma of rose enhances, without eclipsing the subtle flavour of cheese.

The Cruffins are must-try. Molten cheese with complex nutty flavours and crispy baked crust hit all the rights notes in terms of taste and texture.

Burnt cheesecakes are exceptional too due to the corporation of four cheeses. If one is looking for silky creamy smooth texture in cakes, these are the choices.

Chendol Delight is timeless classic. Attap Chee gives the extra kick in bite, the Gula Jawa adds the beloved caramel goodness and the smooth coconut custard is so creamy.

Bandung Rose Cheese Tart is bursting with the beautiful aroma of rose. A truly creation of indulgence.

Seashore 2.0 does look ordinary as compared to the cakes and pastries mentioned above. There is no defining, outstanding point about the taste. It is just nice.

Thoughts: Amazingly good cakes. One of my favourite bakery.

The Cheese Cake from Ginza

The moment one opens the packaging, the aroma of eggy cake sponge will greet one’s olfactory senses. And a bite of this soft, fluffy, moist cake will reward the taste buds with the subtle, nuanced harmonized flavours of cream cheese, custard and cake. This is so good that it is worth the pretty high price tag. Will definitely impress if given as gift.

Morozoff - Mascarpone Cheese Cake is a must-try

Closed

It is not like one can easily find mascarpone cheese cakes in bakeries here, so this fact alone is enough for me to take the plunge and buy the whole cake—actually, I was there to buy a bottle of water only at first. And I am glad I did because it is impossible to stop at one slice.

The very mild nutty flavour of cheese is so subtle in taste yet surprisingly more distinct in the mist of creaminess. Maybe it is because there is no distraction from other stronger flavours. Yes, the best mascarpone cheese baked goods are kept pure—no chocolate and whatsoever. And the mascarpone cheese cake here gets it right.

The texture of the baked cheese cake is so soft and sublime. It almost literally melts in the mouth. And the cookie base is crumbly, soft and moist, complementing the cheese cake perfectly. Maybe that is part of the reason why one slice is not enough.

By the way, it seems like no label is used to indicate which cheese cake is in the box, so better to visually inspect that the cake is the correct one since this place also offers Hokkaido Cheese Cake, which is darker in colour. While I believe that Hokkaido Cheese Cake will taste great too, but it is slightly cheaper than Mascarpone Cheese Cake. So make sure you do not bring the wrong one home.

Thoughts: Loving it!

LeTAO - The Wonderful Marriage of Two Forms of Cheesecakes

Double Formage: mousse cheesecake decked on top of baked cheesecake, à la New York cheesecakes. Who would have thought that this combination works beautifully, and Le TAO happens to be one of the few places to let us discover this.

First thing first, when purchasing the cheesecakes, you will be asked on your choice between chilled and frozen. If you intend to tuck into it within the day and you will not lugging the cheesecakes around under the hot Singapore sun for hours, go for chilled one. Because the frozen one takes hours to defrost, and I can tell you that even after waiting for hours, the cake spots the consistency of a ice-cream. There are recommendations on letting the ice cream warm up a bit for few minutes after taking it out of the freezer in order to enjoy the unadulterated flavours of the dessert. The same goes for Le TAO's cheesecake. The true flavours of the cake are trapped in the coldness, resulting in a somewhat nice cheesecake.

But when biting into the cake that is thoroughly defrost, there is world of difference in the taste. The mild yet distinctive taste of mascarpone is what "delighting the taste buds with subtlety" is all about. And the baked cheesecake part, made with cream cheese, is slightly salty and features stronger flavours of cheese, complements the mousse cake so well—adding that little extra punch to the overall taste and accentuating the flavour of mascarpone cheese. The combination of these two forms of cheesecakes makes for the perfect texture. Imagine baked cheesecake slathered with a thick slab of delicious cream. Sounds better than the plain old cheesecake, right? The double formage is kind of like this, except that the cream on top is creamier and firmer in this case, thus blurring the distinction between the two layers of cakes and creating the harmonious union of the two.

As for the limited edition formage berry, the tart taste of strawberries added an extra zest to the cake, so I prefer this from "the need to have dimensional taste" point of view. But at the same time, the strawberries muted the delicate flavours of the mascarpone cheese.

From the angle of letting all ingredients shine, the original cake is better. After trying the cakes many times, my conclusion is that I prefer the original one since the addition of mascarpone cheese is for us to enjoy its unique taste. I can pick up other strawberry desserts instead if I want desserts with that extra kick.

So is it the best cheesecake as a lot had claimed? Yes, if I am not taking artisanal cheesecakes into account. Though artisanal desserts are for those really special occasions. For casual indulgence, Le TAO's cakes are good enough for me.

My Thoughts: Yummy!

Love of Japanese Cakes

Recently, NTUC have imported several brands of Japanese cakes, to my delight, so there is no need to fly up to Japan to get a bite of these morsels of delice. Take note that despite the impossibly beautiful packaging, I find that not all are extremely good in taste. So I spent lots of moolahs to try out all and buy extra boxes of the nice ones to give to my loved ones. And here are my findings:

Nagoya Tamogo Manjū (名古屋たまごまんじゅう)
This snack is the only one I remember from my days of working in a Japanese company where my Japanese colleagues would buy Japanese snacks for us. I still recognize this product from the adorable picture of a chick with big head.

Sweet egg bean paste wrapped in thin crepe-like dough skin, this manjū hits the right spots of sweets lovers.

The white bean paste is fine in texture and the egg adds a nice aroma to it. A tad too sweet, but the rich flavours are good enough to indulge in once in a while.

A hot seller in NTUC.

Yubari Melon Steam Cake
Whiffs of the sweet aroma of Hokkaido melon immediately filled the air when biting into this cake with a molten centre that is infused with premium melon. This actually tastes way better than those slices of tasteless melon on sale in fruit stalls.

The cake is fluffy and soft though a bit on the dry side. I guess packaged cakes cannot be as moist and buttery as those freshly made ones. But the molten melon incorporates the needed moisture into the cake when eaten together. So the end result is a blissfully sweet fruity treat.

Another hot seller. All were sold out five days later when I wanted to get more.

Hokkaido Cheesecake
This is basically the light Japanese Cheesecake with a hidden treasure of a molten cream cheese ganache. The cake itself is that decent but ordinary cheesecake. When paired with the creamy, aromatic cream cheese in the centre, it is oh so good. I have no problem finishing five in one go.

Boxes of these fly off the shelves at a pretty fast rate.

Osaka Sachimaneki (大坂幸まねき)
This is an assortment of Japanese cakes that makes very impressive gift. The delicate paper wrappings of pastel colours and hues are so pretty that every time I take one of the snacks to eat, I take a second to admire the packaging.

The one with a cute cartoon of a chick is very similar to Nagoya Tamago manjū in terms of taste, especially the intense sweetness. Though the bean bun in this box of treasures is slightly drier in texture. But it still makes for an addictive treat.

The red bean dorayaki is very sweet, but the rich aroma of the crepe and relatively smooth red bean filling renders this enjoyable snack to tuck into.

The chestnut puff is kind of meh. I think packaged puffs are simply not comparable to freshly made ones since the filling used is of starchy consistency instead of the creamy one. I am no fan of mochi, so it is not exactly fair for me to comment too much on it. One thing is for sure: it did not convert me into a mochi lover.

The green tea cake is between the two ends of the spectrum of taste: not bad in taste and quite moist in texture, but not outstanding in any way.

Well, the manjū and dorayaki make it worthwhile to try this selection of cakes.

Akai Bohshi (赤い帽子)
The biscuits look really good, and the dark and gold packaging impart a royal feel.

Most of the selection are of butter cookies base though the texture is drier than that of Danish cookies. What makes some of these biscuits better than the Danish cookies is the addition of other ingredients. So for the milk roll and tea roll: the ones with no chocolate or almonds, they taste like those ordinary cookies. Surprisingly, the rose cookie, which looks yummy and catches my attention straightaway, disappoints since it is just another cookie with the very faint aroma of rose.

My favourite one is, unexpectedly, the Coffee Macaroon since I have no love for coffee. It is very crunchy, and the thin layer of hardened syrup on top adds extra bite and moisture to this confectionary.

Other favourites are White Chocolate cookie and Almond Leaf. The aroma of roasted almonds really do a lot to add dimension to the taste. The white chocolate imparts the creaminess to buy biscuit, making a whole lot of differences.

Those biscuits wrapped in candy style make nice little bites due to the chocolate coating the wafer.

The strawberry cookie looks absolutely sweet. Taste wise, I like the strawberry cream with dried strawberry bits sprinkled on top since the tart taste and the mild aroma of strawberries speaks of authentic flavourings and ingredients.

This box of cookies makes absolutely wonderful and impressive gift.

Hakodate Mel Cheese

Petite Merville's Mel Cheese from Hakodate is of impressively melt-in-your-mouth texture. Bite into a Mel Cheese, enjoy the smooth fragrant, mildly sweet cake that has the wonderful flavours and aroma of milk, cream and subtle cheese, and then it is gone. Yeah, it melts that easily. One of those top notch decadent, yet light cakes available on the market (this cake won Grand Gold award in Monde Selection).

Eagerly waiting for the next Hokkaido fair to get my hands on these again.

Country of Origin: Japan
Where to get this: Ngee Ann City's Hokkaido Fairs

Produce from Hokkaido

The best gems of this Hokkaido fair are the milk and Farm Designs yoghurt cheesecake (The dried food are not included since I did not try them).

The milk is absolutely sublime; being as refreshing as spring water without compromising on the aromatic creamy (not milky) taste.

The yoghurt cheesecake is very creamy, and of pure cheesecake goodness with very light hint of sourness.

The souffles are melt in your mouth quality, the taste is good, though I prefer Hakodate's cheesecake, which is more aromatic.

The strawberry cube puff looks good and is filled with lots of custard, though I find the taste to be quite ordinary and there is slight weird taste.

As for the crab inari sushi, my suggestion is to eat the crab meat separately from the inari beancurd skin. The inari's taste is too sweet and overpowering that totally eclipses the delicate taste of the crab. The crab is actually pretty good with the subtle taste of the sea, so don't waste it with the inari.
